Rhodes Butterfly Valley & Filerimos Experience

This excursion is not about “rushing to see sights”.
It’s a relaxed, nature-based experience, ideal for the morning.

📱 This guide is designed for easy reading on your mobile — follow it at your own pace.

🌿 Early departure – the key advantage

Starting early means:
• you avoid the heat
• you avoid the crowds
• you enjoy nature at its best

👟 Small details that make a difference

Wear:
• comfortable shoes (very important)
• light clothing

Bring with you:
• water
• a hat

🌿 1st Stop: Butterfly Valley

(2 hours free time)

Here you will find the island’s characteristic butterfly (Panaxia quadripunctaria), also known as the “Rhodes butterfly”.

During the summer months:
• it gathers in large populations
• it covers tree trunks and rocks, creating an impressive natural spectacle

Although we see them during the day, they are actually a nocturnal species, resting on the trees.

Why they choose this valley:
• cool microclimate
• humidity from the streams
• specific trees that provide shelter

🌉 The walking experience

As you walk through the valley, you will encounter:
• beautiful wooden bridges within lush greenery
• small streams and shaded spots
• a calm, almost “magical” atmosphere

👉 This is a place to experience — not to rush.

🦀 A small detail worth noticing

In some parts of the water, you may spot small crabs.
Some of them have markings on their shells that resemble… a butterfly!

👉 Many visitors miss this — take a closer look.

🚶 Walk at your own pace — this is not a race

Important:
• the route includes uphill sections and many steps
• it requires a steady, comfortable pace

Tip:
You don’t need to reach the very top — enjoy as much of the route as you like.

🌱 Respect the environment (very important)

The butterflies are extremely sensitive:
no shouting
no clapping
no disturbance

When disturbed, they consume energy essential for their survival.

🧭 How to move through the area

👉 Suggested flow:
→ relaxed entrance
→ main walking route & photos
→ return without rushing

🎯 Depending on your style:
• Relaxed: stay lower and enjoy the shade
• More active: walk higher up
• With children: keep it short and easy

Plan your return time to be back at the bus on time

What to watch out for

• ❌ Dont rush to see everything
Dont underestimate the route (steps & uphill)
Dont disturb the butterflies

⛪ 2nd Stop: Filerimos Hill

(1 hour free time)

Filerimos Hill combines:
• the ruins of ancient Ialyssos
• the Monastery of Panagia Filerimos
• influences from the Knights’ era

A place with strong historical and spiritual character.

👉 Note: Entrance to the archaeological site and monastery requires an additional ticket (not included in the excursion).

✝ The path to the Cross

One of the most impressive highlights:
• a pathway lined with cypress trees
• Stations of the Cross
• panoramic view at the top

🦚 The peacocks
